He is “immeasurably more”

While John was cooking dinner (yes, he’s amazing….roast with Yorkshire puddings, no less), I was reading out loud to him all the names of God we hadn’t yet covered in our Because He Is series. He looked up and said, “Are you sure you want to finish the series?” It made me smile, because honestly, I don’t.

But my hope is that even though the 21 days are coming to a close, your journey of discovering who He is never stops.

To encourage your curiosity, I want to leave you with this this final, mysterious moment in Revelation.  It’s one of my favourite bible passages!  Jesus is finally here, heaven opens, and God is about to bring together his plan for the salvation of the world.  Jesus comes riding in on a white horse, glorious and victorious.  The passage paints a prophetic picture: eyes like fire, many crowns on His head, and then says

He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.”  Revelation 19:12 (NIV)

It’s a beautiful and humbling place for us to end this series. Because after all we’ve learned about who He is, this verse reminds us: there is still more.   Another name, that no one knows (yet?)

God has revealed so much of Himself to us, and yet He remains, in part, beyond our full understanding. His ways are higher, His wisdom deeper, and His presence more glorious than we can know.

We trust Him not only for what we understand, but in what remains a mystery.

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”  1 Corinthians 13:12

One day we will see Him face to face. And on that day who he is will be made known, the unknown name may be made known not just to be understood with the mind, but to be known in the heart, spirit to Spirit.

And for what you don’t understand about God today, let your heart rest in the mystery.  Personally I love the mystery, wonder and journey of discovery that is knowing God.

As we finish this series this is my prayer, that you would know him more.

Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

Because He is… immeasurably more.

Reflection:

As you finish this series, pause to thank God for something He has revealed to you that has gone deep, and take a moment to thank him for it.
