A Personal Encounter with God
Read: Daniel 9:1-23
Daniel was a man of prayer. Three times a day, he prayed- morning, noon, and night. A cultural norm for the Jewish people had become a lifestyle for Daniel. He understood the rhythms of prayer and the importance of stealing away into God’s presence.
It was from this position, that Daniel saw visions, interpreted dreams and had visits from angels. However, Daniel was not spurred on by the big events or the miraculous. He was not chasing the next wonderful sign. In Daniel 9, we see his heart and true motivation.
‘I learned from reading the Word of the Lord….so I turned and pleaded in prayer and fasting.’ (vv2-3)
Revelation from the Word of God prompted him to pray and fast. In this case, for repentance on behalf of God’s people. His heart was for the Kingdom of God.
Daniel proclaimed God’s promises and faithfulness. He confessed his own sin and the sins of his people. He prayed for favour once again.
Something unexpected happened when Daniel fasted and prayed. It was not an immediate breakthrough or a triumph beyond imagination. Yes, an angel visited, but within his message came an important validation:
‘You are very precious to God.’
We see this message repeated several times in the Book of Daniel.
Be encouraged that God is listening to every prayer and cry of your heart. Amid the pleading, allow him to speak. His words give us the strength to carry on when the trials become overwhelming. It is in this quiet space that you may hear him say, ‘you are loved, you are chosen, you are called, you are mine’.

Reflection: What has led you to this season of prayer and fasting? Is it obedience? A specific request? A longing for signs and wonders? The need for a breakthrough?
These are all compelling reasons to practice fasting. Even so, do not discount the personal encounter with God.
Prayer: Father God. I pray that your Word will be a light to my path. Show me how to pray. Help me make space to wait on you today. You know my every need, but today I ask to hear your voice. Encourage me in this quiet space. I long for more of you. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
