What is your Why?
My personality type is one that likes to ask ‘why’. Not so much about mechanical or electrical gadgets, but more about why people do what they do. One of my good, gracious friends does not overly enjoy my sometimes probing “why” questions and will divert them if he can. One hilarious and very effective diversion he came up with in response to a question I asked was to pose an alternate question “why don’t we see any baby pelicans on the lake?”. That’s a good distracting question. Feel free to google that if you’re interested.
But my biggest “why” question that I ask myself is “why are we here, and what are we supposed to do?”.
In Daniel 2:47, King Nebuchadnezzar declares, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets”.
I must agree with King Neb’ - our Father God is all knowing and will reveal secret things if we ask.
Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know”.
So back to my main line of questioning. Why are we here? What are we supposed to do? We all need to have a personal answer that sits well in our souls. Something that goes a bit deeper than ‘I’m here just to have a good time’.
For me, I find Romans 11:36 scratches where I am itching. It says, “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.”
I consider that I am a part of “all things”. So therefore, I am from Him, and I am through Him and I am to Him.
Let me unpack that a little…
“From Him” - I am made by God.
“Through Him” – Because I have dedicated my life to Jesus, I am motivated, empowered, directed, provided for, comforted by, fulfilled and have purpose.
“To Him” – As well as a consistent desire to please Him, and to be in His presence daily, a deep source of joy is to know that when this life ends, He will welcome me into his eternal dwelling place.
So, in a nutshell, that is my answer to my ultimate why question. With that as a foundation, I can move through each day with my Saviour by my side and find comfort, fulfillment, peace and purpose.
