He Is: “El Elyon”
Because He Is: El Elyon - God Most High
This is one of the more difficult names of God to understand. In a way it’s hidden from us, to teach us to seek God more and unlock deeper, more incredible truth.
We move in our growth from repentance, to growing in faith, and eventually being able to teach His word to others.
This name holds a sense of the unquestionable authority of God and His unseen powers, not yet revealed to us (“I am who I am”).
Thrones and dominions will bow to this power and authority, as it brings about the purposes of God. People are chosen by grace, without deserving it, and are transformed by God, then either accept or reject Him and regardless of their response His purposes prevail.
In Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek shows up and the first mention of El Elyon is made. He is a priest of the Most High, yet without genealogy or descent. According to the natural eye, he is less than Abraham but Abraham tithes to him, a gentile – Wow!?? God is God of, not only the Jews but the gentiles as well.
Even in Psalm 87:4-5 we are blown away again when Rahab, a prostitute, is chosen by El Elyon to be in the lineage of Christ – “the Most High himself will establish her”. It blows our reasoning out of the water. It shows “God’s choice” is sufficient because El Elyon’s power is unsurpassed and unquestionable and gives no explanation (‘because I said so’).
The good news is that when our prayers and our reasoning fail, we have El Elyon to call on. He is the God to call on when all else fails. He is for you - when He opens a door, no man can shut it.
May God bless this name to you.
