Because He is “El Olam” – Everlasting God
El Olam is a powerful declaration of God’s eternal and unchanging nature. In Hebrew El is the word for God which relates to ‘power, might, strength and integrity’ and Olam translates to ‘everlasting, always, perpetual, time without end, eternity’. Olam is translated in different places as ‘everlasting, ever, evermore, perpetual and eternal’ however on every occasion it means ‘unending’, whether it is being used of covenants, possessions, hills, mercy, God or other subjects.
When the two words are put together – El Olam – it is God expressing His Eternal Being as well as His authorship of all things eternal, of all plans and purposes throughout the whole universe! There are over 400 references in the Bible and El Olam reminds us that God exists ALWAYS, possesses EVERLASTING POWER and has NO BEGINNING OR END. He is the Everlasting God, Eternal God, God of All Time, God of Ages, The Unchangeable God, The God of Perpetuity and the Ancient of Days. He is immutable, constant, the same yesterday, today and forever, He doesn’t change, He is from everlasting to everlasting, the Alpha and Omega, who was and is and is to come. He refers to himself as ‘I AM WHO I AM’ which reminds, and assures, us that He truly was and is and always will be. There is no other who can fulfil this statement!
The first time El Olam is used is in Genesis 21:33 - ´ And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.’ The root meaning of these two words when used together emphasize key aspects of God - His eternal nature, the fact that He remains constant throughout all eternity and that He is the Sovereign Ruler of the universe with authority over all things.
To know God’s Name is to know Him in a supernaturally intimate way. Ponder that! This eternal and everlasting God has chosen to reach out to you individually to get to know you, and you Him. I’m sure when you try to comprehend the magnitude of Our God you will not only choose to revere, honour, glorify and exalt El Olam but choose to spend time with Him and grow closer to this amazing, loving and Everlasting God!
